Best dress ever
I can’t think of anyone who is that special and amazing and different that just BEING is all they ever have to do to benefit the world and achieve excellence. I can’t think of an identity, personality or way of being that negates any need to act. At some point you have to DO something, not just be someone. I think, but I could be wrong.
I swear
Some people are fucking ridiculous
I’m scrolling through my dash from the skinhead shit last night and these dicks are still angry that a bunch of POC were weary of a group associated with the violence of people against people like us
In what fucking world do you KNOWINGLY call your…
This is a very interesting post. Skinheads know that the look can have negative connotions to a lot of people based on recent historical fact, and even present fact (we all know there are some boneheads knocking about being all NF and calling themselves skinheads). Your average self aware skinhead in the modern day thinks about these things, because if they are nice (and in my experience they mostly are), they don’t want people to feel intimidated and threatened by them. It’s a hard look of course, many a skinhead would like to look like he could hold his own in a fight, if there was a need to defend someone, but few want to affect that they are mindlessly violent and target particular groups. But that doesn’t change the fact that it DOES come across that way sometimes, as stated earlier. So why do skinheads not just stop? I think it is because we love the Spirit of ‘69: Trojan ska (and later 2tone), being suited and booted, working class ethic of working hard and enjoying life. I don’t think many people can fully understand why a culture that was really quite integrated (as far as one that existed in a predominately white culture could be at least) could have went so awry. By integrated I just mean the whole thing had origins in Jamaican rudeboy culture, was lead by Jamaican musicians, and was open to people of all races (Skinhead/skinhead culture and PoC aren’t mutually exclusive, that is a fact). When 2tone came in later, it had an aim of being multi racial and breaking down barriers (and that is straight from the horses mouth… Pauline Black, Jerry Dammers, Neville Staple and others!). Most people understand skinhead this way within the subculture, and want for it to be seen that way by the outside. Skinhead culture as it should be is generally pretty great, it would be a shame if it had to die, I think. But how can skinhead get back to this meaning? Making people feel threatened and hated has to be eliminated completely. Foremost, any racism to be banished entirely; that would obviously have to happen…. The post above expresses that skinheads should ensure to express clearly that they aren’t racist (in my understanding anyways). See, I hadn’t quite figured that out, because I always thought having a SHARP patch and that isn’t needed, just can be inferred in action. But the post gives some insight that I lacked, in future I will try harder to make very clear that I will not ever behave violently and endeavour never to act with discrimination or hatred. It’s good to know these things, sorry that I didn’t already. I see it is too soon to not have to say it, too soon for it yet to just be assumed, because terrible experiences still exist, as memories and incidents.
I hope one day skinheads and the way they are seen can move from this, and it can be how it was always meant to be, without fear for anyone.
I hope I didn’t do anything very wrong in posting, always good to discuss these things and learn, I think. Maybe I should be a mod instead!
yup to the bold
Regardless of what the history of what skinheads are, the association is one of hatred and violence against POC so the common reaction from POC is fear.
Some one reacting in a way to protect them selves from what they view as a threat is normal, getting angry that something assiocated with racism will be viewed racist doesn’t make sense.
Most people don’t know what SHARP is.
The reality is skinheads are viewed as racist for a very good reason. If you want to re-claim what it was originally about, you’re going to have to tell others about the history and the fact you’re fighting racism because i won’t feel even a little bit sorry for avoiding someone calling them selves a skinhead
I think most of us strongly DO want to reclaim that, and those who don’t, we don’t really want them. And we DO want to banish racism from our ranks. I would enjoy and take pride in sharing our history and real meaning before it got hi-jacked and sullied because that was something great. I underestimated the difference between how I see skinheads, and how they are seen generally. Thanks for that post anyways, I think it’s helpful to non skinheads and skinheads both, to discuss such things.

indeed the can’t.
I’m the worst because I liked first and foremost the brilliant boot girl skanker, but the message is good too (who likes racism? Only racists!) and it makes it more tumblr friendly I suppose.
